Summer Hair Care

The summer is almost here, long sunny days, lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun and hot hazy days. As summer moves into high gear and temperatures soar, your hair is in danger of becoming dry and damaged. You know the look, frizzy out of control hair that looks like a bird made a cozy nest in.  While going to the beach or anywhere else outdoors for that matter is something we all look forward to,  it’s important not to let all that fun in the sun wreak havoc on your lovely locks. Here we look at some of the ways to care for your tresses.

Simplify your hair styles.  Your hair is already taking enough abuse from the heat and sun. Avoid using hair irons on a regular basis because it splits the hair.  Your hair will become thin and frail if you use hair irons on it every day. If can’t help using them avoid using cheap hair irons and be sure to use a thermal protector.  We recommend  using Achieve 10 Styling Creme,  it is a heat protector and humidity blocker both very important for protecting your hair in the summer.

If you desperately need to use them, blow dry your hair first with a round brush and then go over it with the iron, this will be less damaging. If you go to the beach for the day, keep your hair tied up when you’re swimming. The sun and the heat strip the hair and take the moisture out. You need to wash your hair immediately afterwards and leave the conditioner on till you get home. Make sure you don’t let the sea salt dry your hair out.

Chlorine is another problem especially for women with blonde hair. The hair can turn green, especially if it is very porous and has been bleached often. If you find you are losing your hair color  quickly in the summer use our Shine Remedy Intensive Glossing Treatment products.  These products are used to nourish the hair and enhance your natural color or they will freshen and maintain your color treated hair. Shine Remedy is an intensive conditioning treatment and hair glossing in one! Shine Remedy uses minerals and vitamins, as well as an innovative trademarked ingredient, Pro-Element, which drives the select minerals and vitamins quickly and deeply into the hair.

Which one should you choose?

Sunglow is for light brown to dark brown shades that desire golden hi-lights.
Fire is perfect for medium brown to dark brown shades looking to add red hi-lights, as well as for those who want to maintain the red in their color treated hair.
Moonlight is for the darkest brown shades as well as grey tones. Keep the unwanted brassy tones out with Moonlight.
Ice is for blondes, chemically hi-lighted, and all shades of hair color. Enjoy the intense shine this gloss adds, as well as the amazing conditioning it provides.  These products are fabulous conditioning treatments which are essential to keep your locks healthy and in good condition during these hot sunny days.

Remember it is not good to wash your hair everyday because the natural oils in our hair are a treatment on their own. When you’re drenched in sweat from the intense heat you will probably want nothing more than to wash your hair in cool water but be sure to avoid washing it too much as it will dry the hair out. When our hair is oily it is doing a treatment on your scalp and hair.

Other tips: start brushing your hair from the bottom and work your way up. Don’t tie your hair up in hair bands when it’s wet. Avoid split ends by getting a regular cut every 6-8 weeks. It will keep your hair thick and healthy.

To avoid a frazzled looking mop of hair, keep dryness at bay and ward of any split ends. Try to use a protective spray on your hair before you go and spend the day frolicking on the beach or wherever. Or protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or if you don’t fancy sporting that look, simply apply a leave-in conditioner on the ends of your hair.

They say your hair is your crowning glory and to a certain extent this is true. Keep your hair shiny and bright by keeping evils such as sun, heat and chlorine at bay. Tweaking your beauty regime to suit summer and investing in some essential beauty products will leave you feeling and looking fantastic. It’s a win-win situation!

Fun Summer Hair Styles for 2011

Rich color and retro 80's cuts are the hot hair news for Summer 2011 ....

When it comes to picking your haircut for 2011 there's one thing you need to know: the year's fashion is all about revivals. Revivals of the 60s, revivals of the 70s, and revivals of more recent looks. And as it is for fashion, so too is it for 2011's haircuts.

In 2011 the most on trend haircuts take their influences from the 20th century, with short haircuts influences by the 1960s and mid-length haircuts influenced by the 1970s.

Be a tease this summer with big 80's hair and highlights. Side ponytails and hair bows are also making a comeback. The pony tail and bob continue to be hot looks, with last year's precision cuts giving way to bold 80's style pixie cuts and spiky fringes coming to the forefront this year as the summer of 2011 heats up .

SUMMER COLOR

Bold and asymmetrical are the watchwords for 2011, with traditional bright and vibrant highlights of the past, including strawberry and even platinum blond hues predicted to be the hot new look this summer. With the addition of dramatic chunks of pastel color, this year the spotlight is definitely on fun and creativity!

SUMMER 2011- CUTS FROM THE CAT WALK

Styles, lengths and cuts were once again all over the place at the Spring-Summer 2011 fashion events, including buns, rolls and bobs, ponytails, and even big hair and teased side ponytails tied up in hair bows, a la the 1980's Madonna look.  In general, styles are becoming more free and casual compared to super neat precision cuts of the past several years.

Bob

Back again this summer, the classic bob features strong graphic outlines incorporating curves and sharp lines. Go for asymmetry - try one side longer or raise the back and lower the front. Mix lengths gradually, add volume with layers or stick to one length cuts. This is a cut that you can tailor to your face and lifestyle -- a look for the individual. Soften it with wisps or a bit of back combing.

 Fringe

Still very hot for summer 2011, fringe cuts were tops on many of the runway's top models. Fringe can add elegance or make a bold statement. Look for variations with fringe cuts to bring out your personality and facial structure. Soft and wispy fringes, casual choppy edges and strong bold lines will all be hot. You'll find fringe cuts that go full length, others flowing mid length or brought forward into the eye. It's all about having fun, being sexy and being yourself

Layers

The cut that complements all the others in high fashion circles this season is lengths of layers with casual textures. The natural look is easy to create with layers of un-styled, free moving hair. Not a lot of curl but plenty of slightly tousled waves added to the volume and texture make this a fun way to style your hair.

Crop

For summer 2011 the focus continues to be on natural looking movement and volume. Crops are holding their own this season with short un-regimented lengths adding textures and bounce to this cut. Forget the solid crop and go for broken edges and textures that use the natural flow of your own hair as the guide.

Fashion Trends for Spring and Summer 2011 - What's Hot?

FASHION - How many of us hear that word and get worried?  Thinking, “Will my clothes from last Spring and Summer work?”  “Will the new styles look silly on me?”  “How much will it cost me this year to be fashionable?”

First and foremost fashion should be fun!  If you cringe every time you hear what’s new in the fashion world - you are taking it too seriously.  Loosen up and have fun with your sense of style.  Embrace the new trends you like and ignore the others.  Try something new even if it may feel silly the first time you wear it.  I remember when leggings came back in style.  I thought, I wore them in the eighties there is no way I am going back to that look.  Guess what, the more I saw others wearing them the more I got over the grudge.  The first time I put them on I felt a little silly thinking  my kids would laugh.  Now they are one of the most versatile piece of clothing I have.  So keep and open mind. Embrace what you love, ignore what you don’t and try something new.  You may end up loving it!

Oil Slick in Your Hair?

Why it occurs?
Since hair grows from a skin follicle, it’s inevitable that oil is produced.  But how much sebum ends up on your scalp, and trickles down the strand is due to genetics, the condition of your scalp and your intake of certain foods.  While hormones play a part, hot and spicy foods can cause your body temperate to rise internally, which gets release through the pores in the scalp.  Another cause for oily hair is overconsumption of sugar and fat.  When you eat too many saturated fats, your body will purge itself of the extra oils, which can show up in your scalp.
How to correct it?
Since oily hair is directly related to an oily scalp cut out any foods that encourage the overproduction of oil.  You may want to try to add more raw foods and healthy foods into your diet to counteract the effects of saturated oils.

What foods should I include?
Include complex carbohydrates, olive oil, sushi, fresh fruits and vegetables.

What foods to avoid?
Avoid fried foods, preservatives and sugar-heavy meals

What Calista Tools product should I use to combat oily hair?
The best Calista Tools shampoo and conditioner for oily hair is Amplify Volume Shampoo and Refine Volume Conditioner.  Both of these volume products are perfect for oily hair.  They gently remove oil, dirt and debris from your hair without stripping the hair.  Amplify and Refine deliver color protection and ideal cleansing for hair types that require daily washing. Amplify contains a patented ingredient called ProElement which opens the hair follicle, expanding the hair adding thickness and volume while removing extra oil. The minerals, vitamins and antioxidants in Amplify create thicker stronger hair, full hair with shine. Our formula contains ingredients vitamin A, E, C, aloe, white tea, copper, zinc and manganese, to name a few. Other shampoos offer volume but without ProElement, the volumizers and minerals won’t effectively penetrate the hair. Say goodbye to thin oily hair.
